Marco Lopulalan – geboren 23-02-1969
Als Molukse jongen van 18 zette Marco zijn eerste stappen in de kristalfabriek van Royal Leerdam Crystal. Hij is opgegroeid in de arbeiderswijk van Leerdam, “achter de Pijp” welteverstaan.
Lopulalan is als een vis in het water en valt op de werkvloer al snel op vanwege zijn creativiteit. Hij mag een opleiding doen en schopt het uiteindelijk tot Meesterglasblazer. Een titel die hij met trots draagt. “Ik ga altijd voor het hoogst haalbare!”
Marco voelt zich niet per se een kunstenaar maar een ambachtsman. Tuurlijk drukt hij als glasblazer een bepaalde stempel op een stuk, een soort eigen handschrift. Maar het gaat hem meer om de skills, het feit dat je alle aspecten van het glasblazen onder de knie hebt. Dat maakt hem meester. Toch is het een term die hij zelf in het verleden niet veel gebruikte. Het was meer iets wat andere over hem zeiden. Zeker omdat hij jarenlang hét gezicht van Royal Leerdam Crystal is geweest. In die functie heeft hij in 2002 het huwelijksservies voor Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Maxima mogen blazen.

Sinds 2020 is Marco voor zichzelf gaan werken. Marco ontwerpt (al dan niet samen met de klant) blaast en werkt al zijn eigen glasobjecten zelf af in zijn coldshop in Leerdam.

Marco maakt klantgebonden glasobjecten voor bedrijven als Volvo Nederland of Total Energies maar heeft ook een eigen collectie Optiekvazen. Kenmerkend voor deze serie is het lijnenspel en het herkenbare design met een knipoog naar de jaren ’30.
Lopulalan reisde de afgelopen decennia de hele wereld over, volgde workshops, bezocht wereldberoemde glasateliers in Italië en Tsjechië. Hij werkte samen met meesterontwerpers als Siem van de Marel en Peter Bremers.
Zijn gedrevenheid komt voort uit wat het vak voor hem betekent. Het heeft hem zo’n tien jaar gekost om het een beetje onder de knie te krijgen. Daarna kwam het moment dat hij over de drempel stapte; hij werd gegrepen door het glas – vergelijk het met een verliefdheid. Vanaf toen ontwikkelde hij een passie voor het vak en doet hij er alles aan om die liefde te laten groeien. En hoe hij het precies doet, kan hij eigenlijk niet vertellen. Hij gebruikt zijn handen en zijn mond en dat precies op het juiste moment, terwijl het vloeibare glas afkoelt. Het zit voortdurend in zijn hoofd.

As a Moluccan boy of 18, Marco took his first steps in the crystal factory of Royal Leerdam Crystal. He grew up in the working-class district of Leerdam, “behind the Pijp” that is. His grandfather was a chalice maker at "De Hut", a specialization that Marco masters like no other. And then you go to the glass factory where not only his grandfather but also his mother worked .
Lopulalan is like a fish in water and quickly stands out in the workplace because of his creativity. He is allowed to do an education and eventually becomes a master glassblower. A title he wears with pride. “I always go for the highest attainable!”
Marco does not necessarily feel like an artist but more a craftsman. As a glassblower, of course he puts a certain stamp on a piece, a kind of his own handwriting. But it's more about the skills, the fact that you have mastered all aspects of glassblowing. That makes him master. Yet it is a term that he himself did not use much in the past. It was more like what others said about him. Certainly because he has been the face of Royal Leerdam Crystal for years. In that position he was allowed to blow the wedding service for King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima in 2002.
After the company shut down Royal Leerdam Crystal as a factory (2020), Marco decided to continue as a self-employed person. An enormous challenge, but one that he has seized with both hands. He is one of the last to manage the technology of the Leerdam School and he does not want to let it go to waste.
In recent decades, Lopulalan has traveled all over the world, attended workshops and visited world-famous glass workshops in Italy and the Czech Republic. He collaborated with master designers such as Siem van de Marel and Peter Bremers.
His drive comes from what the profession means to him. It took him about ten years to get the hang of it. Then came the moment when he stepped over the threshold; he was seized by the glass – compare it to a crush. From then on, he developed a passion for the profession and does everything he can to let that love grow. And he can't really tell how he does it. He uses his hands and his mouth at just the right moment as the liquid glass cools. It's constantly in his head.
